BRITISH STANDUP PADDLEBOARD ASSOCIATION
BORN TO RIDE COURSE
With the support of the Guernsey Sports Commission, we are now offering pilot rookie SUP lessons with the aim of starting a SUP academy for the develop of the sport in the Island. The initial lessons will cover the basics to determine ability levels per age groups and then, during the summer holidays, we will offer the opportunity for those that want to take the sport further, to sign up for a one hour session split over six lessons which will cover everything needed to develop all aspects of SUP including board skills, paddle stroke, speed, balance and tricks.
The aim is to get kids up-to a level whereby Guernsey can complete locally i.e. against Jersey, and then if there is anyone who shows significant talent then we will help promote them so they can look to compete in the UK and maybe further afield. Technical, short distance, and long distance races are now held globally and SUP is soon to be an Olympic sport with negotiations about inclusion in the Paris 2024 games. Sponsorship from board, paddle and clothing manufacturers are always available for those that can compete to a decent level and boys and girls are both racing together at most levels / age groups.
For the 2022 trial phase, we will offer an hour session for the following age groups:
8 to 9 year olds - Rookie 1
10 to 11 year olds - Rookie 2
12 to 14 year olds - Rookie 3
We have 6 spaces available at each year group, the sessions will be one hour each and the cost will be £20 per rookie.
The dates for the trial phase will be the week starting the 18th July - actual days, locations and times to be confirmed once we know the weather forecast. We can then plan from the best location which is also suitable for the tide during the day.
Once the introduction phase is completed, then the 6 lesson course will started, if there is enough interest within the community. This will start with the basics and work up too short races and beyond. The cost will be the same, at £20 per lesson, but a discount will be offered for a full course booking.
No experience with SUP is necessary, but beneficial, and the rookie should be water confident and be comfortable in deeper water and to be part of a group setting, be willing to learn and, if at all possible, have a spark of interest in SUP. Having their own wetsuit would be big bonus, as the kids will absolutely be getting wet, and we will supply buoyancy aids and all the other equipment that the kid need.
